Can I get disease from household pests in Raleigh?
There are many reasons not to want bugs and rodents in your house. They can cause a lot of damage, they can injure you with bites or stings, and they can also make you sick. Several household pest species in Raleigh are known to spread diseases that can be transmitted to you through a bite, by eating food contaminated by the pests or simply by living in close proximity to them. Some of these diseases may even be life-threatening.
Diseases you may contract from pests found in Raleigh include:
Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome - A virus that is sometimes carried by rodents and can be contracted by breathing in their fecal spores. Hantavirus causes fever, fatigue, and muscle aches, followed by coughing and shortness of breath. Though hantavirus cases are rare they can be extremely severe, with a significant mortality rate of about 40%.
Leptospirosis - A bacterial disease that is spread through the urine of infected animals, usually rodents. Symptoms of leptospirosis include high fever, headache, chills, muscle aches, vomiting, jaundice, red eyes, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and rash. This disease should be treated with antibiotics promptly to prevent it from worsening and becoming life-threatening.
Salmonellosis - Salmonella bacteria are commonly carried by many local pest species, including ants, cockroaches, and rodents. Most people get salmonellosis from eating food that was contaminated by pests. This disease causes diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, and may require hospitalization in severe cases.
West Nile Virus - One of several diseases that can be transmitted through mosquito bites. West Nile virus causes fever, headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, and rash. There is no special treatment for West Nile virus but symptoms can usually be managed. Mild cases will go away in a week, but severe cases can last for longer.
